Digitalis davisiana Heywood, 1949
Common names: Davis’ Foxglove [En], Yüksük otu [Tu]

Endemic species

Mahmutlar, Analya, ANTALYA ● Turkey

Etymology: This species is named for Peter Davis (1918-1992), the botanical taxonomist who spent his career at the University of Edinburgh – where he worked for 30 years writing and editing the 10 volume Flora of Turkey between 1965 and 1988. Davis collected the new foxglove during a 1948 trip in the mountains of southern Turkey, above the Mediterranean.

Description: Perennial species witch grows to a height of approximately 70 cm. The leaves are simple and opposite. They are mid green and lanceolate with finely toothed margins. Basal leaves are evergreen, shiny green and glabrous. The flowers are tubular, pale yellow, marked with brown veined inside, arranged in racemes. It is similar to Digitalis grandiflora, but with a very floriferous, more compact spike.

Biology: Blooms open from the base of the spike upwards and continue to open over about a month-long period, from June to July.

Habitat: Coniferous forests, with calcareous soils. From 570 to 1600 m.

Distribution: Endemic to Turkey, Southern Anatolia (Antalya, Isparta, Muğla).
