Common names: Azarole, Mosphilla, Mediterranean medlar [En], Azérolier, Azarolier, Épine d'Espagne [Fr], Azarooldoorn [Nl], Azaroldorn [De], Azzeruolo [It], Acerolo [Es], Κράταιγος ο αζαρόλος [Gr], Aliç yapraği [Tu]

Description: Deciduous tree growing to 10 m (32ft 10in) at a medium rate.

C. azarolus is often divided into subspecies or varieties:
C. a. var. azarolus – orange fruit
C. a. var. aronia L. – yellowish fruit often with some red tinges
C. a. var. chlorocarpa (Moris) K.I.Chr. – yellowish fruit
C. a. var. pontica (K.Koch) K.I.Chr. – yellowish or orange fruit

Habitat: Dry hillsides and mountains in woods and hedges.

Distribution: Native to the Mediterranean Basin, from Southern Europe to Western Asia.

Uses: Fruit are edible raw or cooked. The fruit can be used fresh or dried for later use. The fruits and flowers have a hypotensive effect as well as acting as a direct and mild heart tonic. They are especially indicated in the treatment of weak heart combined with high blood pressure.
