![Ruta chalepensis Linnaeus, 1767
Common names: Fringed rue, Egyptian rue [En], Rue d’Alep, Rue de Chalep [Fr], Gefranste Raute [De], Απήγανος, Πήγανο [Gr], Büyük Sedefotu [Tu]
Kızkalesi, MERSİN ● Turkey
Description: Perennial shrub-like plant growing up to 80 cm tall, more or less woody below. The 10–20 cm leaves are compound, twice or three times pinnately divided (bipinnate or tripinnate, giving them a feathery appearance), with oblong-elliptic to linear segments with entire border, prominently dotted with oil-glands and strong-smelling. The lower leaves have (more or less) long stalks and the lower bracts are much wider than the branches which they subtend; the plant is glabrous throughout.
The inflorescence is a cluster of flowers, about 2 cm across, each with four or five bright yellow petals with rolled, fringed edges. The ovary is superior. The floral receptacle has been developed into a gynophore. The fruit is a textured capsule 4-lobed. The seeds are many and are angled.
Biology: It flowers from April until June.
Habitat: Rocky places, edges of woods, dry banks and thickets, usually on limestone.
Distribution: Southern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.
