Halle, BRABANT ● Belgium

Description: Medium size Xylaria, with a cap of 2-8 cm tall up to 2 cm across shaped more or less like a club; with a rounded tip. It is grayish to brownish when young, becoming black with maturity; surface becoming cracked and scaly with maturity.
The stem is often proportionally long, but also frequently short or nearly absent.

Biology: It can be found from Autumn to Winter, growing alone or gregariously.

Habitat: on decaying hardwood logs and sticks (especially the debris of beech and maples), growing directly from the wood.

Distribution: Europe, North America.
