Fritillaria theophrasti Kamari & Phitos, 2000
Syn.: Fritillaria pontica var. substipelata Candargy, 1898

Agiassos, LESVOS ● Greece

Description: This name has been given to the island form of F. pontica. F.pontica var. substipelata has taller stems, narrower leaves and lightly tessellated flowers.
F. pontica has a stem of 15-45cm tall. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate, the lowest usually opposite, the upper in a whorl of three.
The flowers are broadly campanulate, green tinged with reddish-brown but not tessellated, with a spermatic scent.
The tepals are 2.5-4.5cm long, with a nectary circular, blackish, about 5mm above the base. The style is trifid, the branches 5-7mm long, slender, smooth. The capsule is winged.

Habitat: Fritillaria theophrasti is found in chestnut forest above Agiassos (Lesvos). F. pontica is found in open woods and scrub, at up to 1200m.

Distribution: This species or variety is endemic to Lesvos island (Greece). F. pontica grow on Northern Greece and on Turkey.
