Polygonum bistorta subsp. carneum (Koch) Coode et Cullen
Syn.: Bistorta officinalis subsp. carnea (C. Koch) Sojak., Polygonum carneum C. Koch
Common names: Meadow bistort [En], Dağlahanası, Yılankökü, Kurtpençesi, Küçüktene [Tu]

Description: Polygonum bistorta is a perennial herb with stout woody rhizomes.
The stems are ± erect, 20-50 cm. The lower leaves are large, ± lanceolate often truncate at the base, borne on winged petioles, light grey-green beneath, darker green above, glabrous. The ochreae is large, dark brown.
The inflorescence is a spike-like head. The flowers are almost sessile to clearly pedicillate. The perianth is pink, 4-5 mm.
The nuts are matt, brown.
2 subspecies may be recognised:
P. b. subsp. bistorta – flowers pale pink, ± sessile (later stalked); inflorescence oblong – Europe, Siberia, W. Iran. Euro-Sib. element.
P. b. subsp. carneum – flowers deep pink, clearly pedicellate; inflorescence oblong-globose – Caucasia, Euxine (mountains) element.

Biology: Flowering from June to August.

Habitat: Slopes, forests, from 1800 to 3600 m altitude.

Distribution: North and East Anatolia (Turkey), Caucasus.
