Common names: Urville's Dactylorhiza, Turkish Marsh Orchid [En], Balkaymak [Tu]

Olgunlar, ARTVİN ● Turkey

Description: Perennial plant, usually robust of 20-70 cm.
The stem is ± hollow (except in slender individuals), with 3-4 well developed leaves.
The leaves are 15-20 x 3-5 cm, broadly elliptic-obovate to lanceolate, mostly purplish-spotted, sometimes unspotted, the upper 2 bract-like.
The spike is ± dense, to 15 cm long, to 4-6 cm diam. The flowers are large, mauve, rose-purple or dark purplish-violet. The sepals and petals are lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, acute to acuminate, to 16 mm. The labellum is flat, roundish or transversely oblong, usually broader than long, 11-15 x 8-10 mm, subentire or ± 3-lobed, densely covered with dots or fine broken lines. The middle lobe is small, triangular, 4-6 mm; the lateral lobes are usually large, with irregularly crenate-dentate or erose margins. The spur is broadly cylindrical, ±obtuse, 11-14 x 3-5 mm, ± equalling ovary.

Biology: Flowering from June to August.

Habitat: Moist places in deciduous or coniferous forest, Picea & Rhododendron scrub, near springs and streams, peaty alpine meadows, s.l.-2500 m.

Distribution: Turkey (North and NE Anatolia), Georgia, Armenia, Iran.
